AMFA CHALLENGES ELIGIBILITY OF CERTAIN CLASSIFICATIONS IN NMB REPRESENTATION CASE AT ALASKA AIRLINES – HAWAIIAN AIRLINES

Dear Sisters and Brothers:

On September 16, 2025, the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), through its attorneys, submitted a filing to the National Mediation Board (NMB) in the pending representation case involving the combined Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines Mechanics and Related Employees (Case No. R-7669).

In this filing, AMFA is challenging the inclusion of the Cleaner and Line Service classifications (Fuelers/Lavatory Service) on the eligibility list for the upcoming representation election. AMFA argues that:

  • Cleaners and Line Servicemen do not share a “community of interest” with Aviation Maintenance Technicians (AMTs).
  • These groups have different training, licensing, pay structures, reporting lines, and job responsibilities than AMTs.
  • Cleaners and Line Servicemen’s work has been subject to outsourcing agreements and cross-utilization with Ramp Agent classifications under IAM contracts, making them more aligned with Fleet/Ramp classifications.

Based on these claims, AMFA has asked the NMB to exclude Cleaners and Line Servicemen from the Mechanics and Related Employees craft or class for the election.

The IAM maintains that these employees are properly included because they are covered under the same collective bargaining agreement, and share representation history within the Mechanics and Related Employees craft or class, at Hawaiian Airlines.

District 142 will continue to provide updates as this case progresses before the NMB.

Sincerely and fraternally,

John M. Coveny, Jr.
President/Directing General Chair
