Dear Sisters and Brothers:
Once again this year, our District sponsored an Aviation High School (AVHS) student team to attend training at the American Airlines (AA) Tulsa (TUL) Base Maintenance Hangar in preparation for the upcoming Aviation Maintenance Competition (AMC). Thanks to your continued generosity, these young adults were able to practice several AMC event skills hands-on. In previous years, competitors often had to rely solely on reading procedures and visualizing the steps. This time, they were able to physically work through the tasks, gaining a level of confidence and familiarity that will serve them well when they compete in April against some of the finest teams in the industry.
These students truly represent the best of their school. They earn their place on this team through hard work and dedication, and they take great pride in representing AVHS and this District.
Last year’s training was limited to a single day, and just as they were getting into the rhythm of the procedures, it was time to leave. This year, we expanded the training to two full days, giving them the opportunity to deepen their understanding and refine their skills. I reminded them that while we all hope the results reflect their effort, the experience itself is invaluable. Whether they finish first or last, they should embrace the event for what it is—an opportunity that only six students each year are fortunate enough to experience. Compete with everything you have, and be proud of the journey regardless of the outcome.
As I close, I want to share a personal reflection. This marks my fourth year accompanying AVHS competitors to the AMC, and each year I walk away impressed. Their technical ability is remarkable, but what stands out even more is their character. They are eager to learn, respectful, gracious, and genuinely committed to growing as future aviation professionals. They are among the most well-mannered and dedicated young adults I have had the privilege to work with.
Thank you again for supporting these students and investing in the future of our craft.
In Solidarity,
Bud Brown
Director of Flight Safety
