DISTRICT 142 FLIGHT SAFETY PARTICIPATES IN THE AVIATION HIGH SCHOOL SYMPOSIUM

Sisters and Brothers:

We are proud that District 142’s Flight Safety Committee was again asked to participate in the Aviation High School (AVHS) Symposium at the IAM William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center (W3) in Hollywood, MD.

This symposium educates students and potential Aircraft Maintenance Technicians (AMTs) on the advantages of being a union member and teaches them how to be better AMTs once they are in the workforce.

This year, classes were held on Accident Investigation, Human Factors, the Responsibilities of the AMT, and why politics matters. Guest speakers included American Airlines Vice President of Line Maintenance and AVHS Alumni Evie Garces and IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnson.

The students were treated to a guided tour of the National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, VA. They also had a project to present on the final day. This year’s project involved crashes from previous years. The students were tasked with determining what Human Factors played a role, the outcome of the investigation, and what changes were made to prevent future occurrences. Like the class before them, they knocked it out of the park. The training concluded with a tour of IAM International Headquarters in Upper Marlboro, MD, and a final speech by General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes.

We want to thank everyone who contributed to this year’s event, including Air Transport Chief of Staff Edison Fraser, Women & Young Workers Director Julie Frietchen, Legislative Director Hasan Solomon, CLT Grievance Committee Chair Kenny Geis, Local 1903M Recording Secretary Rachel Lee, and all the Staff at W3.

Special thanks to the AVHS instructors who accompanied the students, Phil Fisher and Evelyn Tavarez, and all the teachers and parents from AVHS. It has been an honor and a privilege to be involved with this group of well-rounded, polite, respectful teenagers, not just this time but every time we engage with them. They never fail to impress us, and we hope they have a successful career in Aviation and a lifetime of union membership. If that happens, this Union will continue to thrive!

Sincerely and fraternally,

John M. Coveny, Jr.
