IAM DISTRICT 142 HONORS MEMORIAL DAY

Dear Sisters and Brothers:

On this last Monday in May, we pause to observe Memorial Day, a solemn occasion dedicated to honoring the men and women of the armed forces who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. This day is more than just a long weekend or the official start of summer; it is a powerful reminder of the courage and selflessness of those who have laid down their lives to protect our freedoms.

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, emerged in the aftermath of the Civil War and has continued through subsequent wars and conflicts. It honors the sacrifices made during World Wars I and II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and recent conflicts in the Middle East.

The debt owed to these brave individuals is immeasurable. Their sacrifices have enabled the freedoms we so often take for granted.

Today, communities will gather for parades, ceremonies, and moments of silence. The National Moment of Remembrance, observed at 3 p.m. local time, provides an opportunity for all Americans to pause and reflect on the cost of the freedoms we enjoy. It is a collective act of respect and gratitude, bridging generations and uniting us in our shared history and values.

As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, let our gratitude be evident not only in our remembrance but in our actions, supporting veterans, serving our communities, and cherishing the freedoms that were secured at such a high cost.

Sincerely and fraternally,

John M. Coveny, Jr.
President/Directing General Chair
