Southwest Airlines Operational Changes

Dear Sisters and Brothers:

Southwest Airlines has notified IAM District 142 of upcoming operational changes affecting several locations across the system, including the closure of ORD and IAD and staffing reductions at FLL and ATL.

We understand that announcements like this create uncertainty and concern for many of our members and their families. IAM District 142 stands in full solidarity with every member affected by these changes, and we want you to know that your Union is actively working to ensure that your rights, protections, and options are fully respected throughout this process.

Your Union is enforcing every contractual protection under Article Fifteen – Reduction in Force exactly as written and without exception. We are working closely with the company to ensure that the provisions of the Agreement are followed at every step and that all members receive the protections and opportunities guaranteed under the contract.

Additionally, we have confirmed that space will be available at MDW for all impacted ORD employees and at DCA for all impacted IAD employees, ensuring continued local-area opportunities for those affected.

We recognize how stressful these types of operational changes can be. District 142 General Chairs (GCs) will be available On-Site to answer questions, explain contractual rights and options, and help ensure that the Reduction in Force process is administered fairly and in full compliance with the contract.

District 142 EAP reps will also be on site. Our trained EAP representatives provide confidential support and can assist members and their families who may be experiencing stress or uncertainty related to workplace changes. You can contact District 142 EAP Director Paul Shultz directly at pshultz@iamdl142.org, pm.shultz@att.net, or (704) 907-3563.

IAM District 142 will remain actively engaged throughout this process. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Members needing assistance or additional information are encouraged to contact their General Chair, Union Representative, or an IAM EAP representative.

Sincerely and fraternally,

John M. Coveny, Jr.
