Dear Sisters and Brothers:
As fireworks light up the night sky and parades fill the streets, Americans come together every 4th of July to celebrate their independence. It is a day that commemorates the birth of a nation when the thirteen colonies declared their freedom from British rule. On this Independence Day, let us take a moment to reflect on the struggles and victories of the labor movement and how they have contributed to the freedoms we enjoy today.
Over the years, the labor movement in the United States has continued to fight for workers’ rights and improved working conditions. These efforts have led to many achievements that many may take for granted today, including establishing the eight-hour workday, child labor laws, workplace safety regulations, and the right to collective bargaining.
Perhaps the most significant event in the labor movement’s history was the formation of labor unions. Unions such as the IAM have given workers a collective voice, allowing them to negotiate better wages, benefits, and improved working conditions. Through strikes, protests, and negotiations, unions have secured countless victories that have benefited all workers, regardless of their affiliation.
Today, the IAM continues to advocate for fair wages, paid leave, affordable healthcare, and protection against discrimination. We are continually striving to create a more equitable and inclusive society.
As we gather to celebrate American Independence Day, let us remember the labor movement’s contributions to shaping the nation we call home. The fight for workers’ rights and the pursuit of social justice are integral parts of the American story. On this day, let us honor the sacrifices of those who came before us and recommit ourselves to creating a more just society for everyone. Happy Independence Day!
