HONORING SERVICE: THE IAM’S COMMITMENT TO VETERANS

Dear Sisters and Brothers:

Every November 11, we pause to honor and express our gratitude for the veterans who have courageously served in the armed forces. Veterans Day is not just a holiday; it is a solemn observance that recognizes the sacrifices and contributions of the men and women who have worn the uniform. It is also a call to action—a reminder to ensure that we provide the support veterans and their families need from their military to civilian life.

The IAM has long been a steadfast supporter of veterans and their families. Many union members are veterans, which gives us a unique perspective and strong motivation to advocate for their welfare on Capitol Hill and in local communities across the country.

The IAM Veterans Service Program has helped IAM members who are U.S. military veterans file claims and obtain much-needed benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). To date, the program has generated in excess of $3 million in back pay. In addition to the financial benefits, the program offers assistance and resources for employment, education, home loans, insurance, pension benefits, health care (including mental health care), and burial benefits.

What can you do to help? Encourage your Local to establish a Veterans Service Committee if it doesn’t already have one. District 142 Veterans Service Committee Chair James M. Samuel can help you get one started. You can contact Brother Samuel at . Veterans can also register online with the IAM at https://eforms.iamaw.org/VetContactInfo.

Veterans Day serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served in the military. It’s a day to show appreciation and reaffirm our commitment to supporting veterans in meaningful ways. The Machinists Union stands with veterans and their families not just on Veterans Day but year-round, ensuring they have the resources, respect, and support they deserve.

Sincerely and fraternally,

John M. Coveny, Jr.
