Dear Sisters and Brothers:
In 2008 the United States House of Representatives passed a resolution to establish May 24 each year as Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) Day. AMT Day recognizes the hard work and dedication of aviation maintenance professionals and commemorates the birthday and achievements of Charles E. Taylor, the inventor, machinist, and mechanic hired by Orville and Wilbur Wright to build the engine that would power their Wright Flyer, the first heavier-than-air machine to achieve powered flight.
District 142 represents AMTs at companies including Air Wisconsin, Amentum, American Airlines, Bahamasair, Hawaiian Airlines, and PSA Airlines. A typical day in the life of these highly skilled and highly trained professionals is spent doing some or all of the following:
- Performing routine inspections and maintenance on aircraft such as checking the condition of and replacing worn and damaged parts, checking and replenishing fluid levels and troubleshooting and repairing advanced electronic and avionics equipment and flight controls.
- Documentation! A large portion of each AMT’s day is spent documenting and maintaining records of the work they perform and ensuring that such work meets all the requirements of the FAA and their employer.
- Training. AMTs are constantly being educated and kept up to date on new technologies, techniques, and tooling through dedicated in-classroom training and on-the-job training.
All of us at District 142 extend a sincere Thank You to our AMT’s. You work hard each and every day to ensure the aircraft in our skies are safe and reliable and you are a vital and important part of our Union. We appreciate your dedication to your craft, and we hope you enjoy AMT Day!
Sincerely and fraternally,
John M. Coveny, Jr.
