We have received many questions from concerned members regarding the widely reported Chicago-bound ExpressJet operated flight 5919 that diverted to Indianapolis after quickly dropping altitude in response to a rapid decompression. This rapid descent took place over Kentucky, near the Ohio state line, and lasted about 5 minutes, according aircraft tracking websites. Several crew members and passengers were checked by paramedics. However, we are pleased to let you know that the flight landed safely at Indianapolis Airport and no one was seriously injured.
Our IAM Hotel and Safety Committees have been working together to ensure the flight attendant who was working this flight has everything they need. Accommodations have been made and we plan to continue to provide as much support as necessary.
Situations like this serve as a stark reminder that as flight attendants, we are one of the most integral components of safety and security in the airline industry. It also reminds us of the importance of having IAM committees available on hand to assist and act as an advocate for members in need.
