IAM District 142 Appoints Melissa Hopson as Vice President Alaska Airlines

Dear Sisters and Brothers:

IAM District 142 is pleased to announce the appointment of Melissa Hopson as Vice President – Alaska Airlines.

Sister Hopson joined the IAM in 2005 and has built an impressive 20-year career with Alaska Airlines, serving as a Customer Service Agent, Lead CSA, and Scheduler. Her dedication to our members and her commitment to service are reflected in every role she has taken on.

Melissa began her union leadership journey as a Trustee and Shop Steward for Local Lodge 601. After six months, she stepped into the role of Recording Secretary, a position she has proudly held for the past three years and will continue to hold while serving as Vice President. In addition, she has served as the COPS Chief Shop Steward for the State of Alaska for the past three years and is a member of the AS/HA JCBA Negotiating Committee.

Her leadership training includes Shop Steward programs, Leadership I & II, and Negotiation Preparation at the IAM’s William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center, further strengthening her ability to represent our members with professionalism and passion.

Melissa is Inupiaq from Barrow, Alaska, and lives in Anchorage with her husband and their two children. Her family enjoys subsistence activities, including fishing and berry picking, and she values sharing these traditions with her children. Outside of her union work, Melissa is an avid concert-goer, a collector of Native arts and crafts, and a dedicated mom often found supporting her kids’ many activities or planning their next adventure.

District 142 congratulates Sister Hopson on her appointment and thanks her for her continued service, leadership, and commitment to our membership across Alaska Airlines.

Sincerely and fraternally,

John M. Coveny, Jr.
President/Directing General Chair
